Maternity Sessions

Last Trimester

When

"Hey mama you are glowing!" I'm sure you have heard it plenty of times since announcing your pregnancy and it's TRUE!! I love capturing the true beauty of motherhood and pregnancy, befrore it becomes a memory. The best time for maternity photography is 36-38 weeks (30 with multiples), at this point your baby bump should be poking out although you haven't quite mastered the "pregnant waddle". If you take a look through my portfolio, my favorite thing is capturing families interacting before they become a new family and the beauty that is motherhood.

Let's start planning the newborn session! Feel free to email me as many times as you would like or even create a Pinterest board to share images that you love (it gives me a chance to see a  style that you love).

Please make sure you fill out the questioner provided.

Birth Day

Yah! The day has finally arrived and I'm so excited to capture those tiny fingers and toes! The best newborn photos and easier to pose sessions happen within 10 days of birth, of course it is still possible after it'll just take more effort during the session to get those posable moments.

I know what it's like to talk on the phone with a newborn (I have two boys myself), so please just give me a quick text or email and we can schedule an exact date and time for your session.

Newborn Session

Location

Newborn sessions are photographed in the comfort of your own home! I bring everything needed for a portable studio, so you may relax and have all of your newborn essentials in reach. No more fear of bringing a newborn days old in a car to a strange location. I will set up in a room that provides the most light from a window and need a few electrical outlets.

safety

There is nothing scarier for a new mama then having that little bundle exposed to germs and one of the reasons I photograph in your home environment.

Rest assured before handling any newborn, hands are properly washed and sanitized and sanitized throughout the photoshoot. All props are disinfected prior to any photoshoot and all blankets, outfits, and swaddles are washed in Dreft detergent and laundered.

Newborn safety is my highest priority, from posing to holding in between poses.

SLEEP & EAT

Before your session try and keep your newborn awake for 2-3 hours before my arrival. Tickle those toes, let them kick with only a diaper on, and let them fuss a little without the pacifier. I know this is a huge task for any sleep deprived mama, if possible enlist a family member or friends to help with this task, it makes an enormous difference. Those that don't sleep before have generally a quicker session and less tears.

Prepare to go without feeding for 2 hours and feed upon my arrival while I set up the mobile studio. Once burped we will start preparing him/her for the session. Any clothes will be taken off (except the diaper) and all newborns HATE being naked, so expect this will send that precious bundle into a crying fit. Don't worry though the first shots taken will be after rocking and getting them to sleep.

Temperature

A few hours before your session turn your AC to a higher temp (at least 78).

Babies hate to be cold, especially naked and for that I bring a space heater with me. Be prepared to be sweating for a few hours so dress comfortable.

Feeding

I highly recommend for the session to pump extra if you are breast feeding. Giving a bottle to sooth in while they are in place can be so much better and a full baby is a happy baby.

If possible try and have a pacifier ready to go for those fussy moments in the baskets. Don't worry there will not be any images with a pacifier in- just a soothing technique.

Work Flow

Before starting with the sleepy shots I like to do family photos first, an awake baby with family interacting always turns out great. Family and siblings can get their photos out of the way and then they can go relax for the rest of the session.

I start with clothed shots, then move to the swaddle, and when in a deep sleep we transition to naked shots. The less movement between scenes is easier to keep them in sleepy land.

um....oops

Babies without diapers tend to use everything as their own personal potty. Don't be embarrassed it happens every time! Props are washable and always cleaned and laundered.

I'm so excited to meet your new addition!

Choosing a newborn photographer sometimes seems like a very daunting task. There are so many photographers offering newborn sessions and for whomever you many choose make sure they fit the style you are looking to capture and take safety into the highest priority. Here is a handy list to ask any photographer before making a decision.

Questions to ask your newborn photographer.

For photographers there are so many whom buy a camera and open themselves up to sessions without proper education, beyond the camera. I take pride on being one of the handful of photographers in Rhode Island that is a a member of the Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International (APNPI).  This organization provides continuing education on specifically children under one  and you must pass rigorous safety and professional portfolio testing to be allowed a member.
